'Brut y Tywysogion' (The Chronicle of the Princes) is a translation of the Latin 'Cronica Principium Wallie', which is no longer extant. The Latin 'Cronica' was based on the annals kept by the various churches and monasteries in Wales. The 'Brut' is one of the most important sources about the history of Wales prior to its conquest by Edward I. It begins in 682 with the death of Cadwaladr Fendigaid and ends with the death of Llywelyn ap Gruffudd in 1282. The original version was semingly compiled in he Cistercian abbey of Strata Florida.
There are two main versions of the 'Brut y Tywysogion', namely, the version in the Red Book of Hergest which is now in the Bodleian Library, Oxford, and the more complete Peniarth 20 version which is now in the National Library of Wales. The latter includes additional entries for the years 1282-1332 by later copyists.
