Founder of Llantarnam (1179) and advocate of Goldcliff Priory.
By 1184 Hywel had succeeded his father, Iorwerth ab Owain, as lord of Caerleon.

c.1184 Hywel supported the king of England to lead a company in the defence of the lordship of Glamorgan; there he officiated as castellan of Newcastle, near Bridgend. By 1216 Hywel had been succeeded by his son.
